As Beachgoers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Picture Shows Rescuer Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the renowned beach as her personal space. On that particular weekend night, she, similar to other local residents, detected loud noises ringing out through the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her apartment, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw signaled a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a duo who had rushed up the slope still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up at her rear. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. It was just him heading in the direction that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He moved into something that certainly every part of you would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of courage in the wake of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and paramedics attending to dozens of victims.

Community Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the community, with the patrol base beside the location of the violence transforming into a impromptu medical station. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including rushing into the ocean to save people who were struggling.

Following the events, statements of appreciation circulated widely. An online statement expressed appreciation for the individuals who showed that “compassion will always overcome darkness”.

The team of beach patrol published a communication, saying they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive words and support. We are deeply moved by the care directed at our responders,” the group wrote. “When ready, we will share our stories in the aim that it helps those affected.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the team performed exceptionally from the instant the incident began through to late that night.

“People have shared so many emotional narratives, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a local official.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in ensuring our world-famous beaches safe for visitors, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the horror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much light we have observed in the midst of such hatred.”
