Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company alongside his partner, revealed how he plans to personally create this new product as part of an individual collection highlighting causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators and Parent Company
The recent development deepens the ongoing conflict among the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how Unilever along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced via social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he will develop additional ice cream flavors that address concerns which the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been compromised after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence so that it can fulfill the social mission, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
