Defiant Wilfried Nancy shows no fear of dismissal but the Parkhead faithful show wrath after derby defeat.
The Celtic boss insisted he was not afraid of losing his job, maintaining, “We are extremely close to a turnaround,” despite sliding worryingly close to being fired with a heavy loss to the Ibrox side.
A Second-Half Meltdown Sees Derby Defeat
The home side were in front Rangers at the interval but a disastrous second period let Danny Röhl’s team to move level on points with the reigning Scottish Premiership champions. The French coach, who was hired from the MLS, has now overseen six defeats in his first eight matches.
“We are together at the club,” stated Nancy.
Asked directly about whether he was concerned, he replied: “I don’t think about it. I think about finding ways to aid my players to be good on the fine details.
Supporters' Anger Outside Parkhead
The fans displayed their anger – directed at the board and manager – by gathering outside the stadium. The hierarchy would be most likely to re-appoint Martin O’Neill, who steered the club during a temporary stint last year, if Nancy departs.
“Wins and losses [that leads to pressure]. That is the situation for the moment. However in stating that’s how it is, it doesn’t mean that I am a defeatist guy. Not at all. The message is the turnaround is near, really, really close to change the narrative.”
Focus on the Details
The coach highlights the fact his team play well for one half at a time. For instance, but for wastefulness in front of goal they could have been better than 1-0 up. “There were positives aside from the fact that we didn't take our chances,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but I must remain fair.
“The level we had at times was exceptionally high. That happened. I could not say that if it was untrue. Therefore, in terms of results, I noted it's a repeating pattern. For that reason I believe we are really close to getting it right. But for the moment: the fine margins.”
“I saw many, many good things that we did, once more. However it’s about consistency. My narrative would be different if I didn't believe it. That’s why I firmly believe we’re going to be able to turn things around.”
The Rangers Boss Response
Danny Röhl was cautious about a title charge even after what seemed like a huge result. “One match at a time, and we can develop momentum,” he said. “The confidence in the squad is immense.”
