Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Controversy
The video footage, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in armed forces or defense capacities.
"Like us, you all made an oath to defend and support this national charter," the officials stated in the brief video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."
Trump's Incensed Response
The video message reportedly prompt a angry reaction from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined declaration censuring the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional national pride and distinction. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and call on GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the security of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme social media posts and retract his aggressive discourse before he causes harm," the announcement continued.
Officials' Firm Response
The officials who appeared in the video also released a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who care for this nation and took an vow to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The significant point is that the president considers it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the national charter and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "All citizens must unite and denounce the ex-president's calls for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Additional Partisan Responses
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is calling for the capital punishment of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and without qualification."
The GOP leader justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also reportedly informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
Administration Statement
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the executive branch representative replied: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the president is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "You have active officials of the US Congress who worked together to arrange a recorded statement to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces relies on the command structure, and if that system is compromised, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
