Fury Surges as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Criticism
Personalities from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Post
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bond was established at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
This is a disgusting and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. She pointed to previous comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from Within Party
A number of GOP elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared others in his party to defend the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends unequivocally following the shooting of a different political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
