The esteemed football figure has declared that he is avoiding a re-entry into football management, explaining that it would be tough to match the special mission he felt as the national team coach.

He expressed his aim to focus his energy toward working with young people and combating what he called a pervasive negative narrative currently existing in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Away from Football

During a broadcast discussion, he was questioned on speculation linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Commitment to Positive Examples

Prior to the publication of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, Southgate emphasized that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for teenagers, drawing on insights from his period as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

The leader maintains that his experience leading the national team, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to greatly admired, holds broader applications.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he explained. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, he remarked: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Discord

Southgate stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often centers on disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is expected to offer additional perspectives on leadership and national identity inspired by his notable professional journey.
