Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Favorites

Reports have confirmed that three different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Iconic Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief appearance is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the series creator.

"I remember the phone call. I recall the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A part that is now embodied in each and every Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."

The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fans

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who damages the beloved series.

"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I have no idea if the movie's gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Theories and Anticipation Run High

While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a strange shared scenario. The chance of a self-referential story, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.

Moviegoers will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
