The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
