Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute staff reductions.

A report contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of September but not the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
